Day 2

The South Coast Waterfalls and Black Beaches

VÍK - The southernmost village in Iceland, renowned for the breaktaking black beaches of REYNISFJARA.  To the west lies DYRHÓLAEY, a promontory formed by a submarine volcanic eruption and known for its distinctive large archway.  SKÓGAR | A tiny village that is home to not only a fantastic folk museum with an outstanding collection of artifacts and impressive turf houses, but it is also home to SKÓGAFOSS, one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls with a width of 82 feet and a drop of 200 feet.
SELJALANDSFOSS - One of the most picturesque waterfalls in all of Iceland. Here, the river SELJALANDSÁ drops 200 feet over the cliffs of what used to be the island’s coastline. If favorable conditions allow (and if you don’t mind getting a bit wet!), it is possible to walk behind the waterfall.
Optionally you can take the ferry to the Westman Islands on the South Coast of Iceland.
VESTMANNAEYJAR - THE WESTMAN ISLANDS An archipelago formed by submarine volcanic eruptions and located a short ferry ride from the southern mainland. HEIMAEY is the largest and most populated of the islands, although the historical eruption of ELDFELL in 1973 nearly rendered it uninhabitable. Despite the eruption occuring without warning, the 5300 residents of the island were evactuated within hours, and seawater was used to slow the lava flow that was threatening to destroy the harbor – the island’s main source of income and livelihood.
Explore these magnificent volcanic Islands. Take the ferry to the mainland.

Day 3

The Golden Circle

ÞINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK - A UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Iceland’s most fascinating places due to both its impressive geological formations and for the significant role it plays in the country’s history as the original meeting site of the Icelandic parliament, the oldest existing parliament in the world.
GULLFOSS - A majestic double waterfall that tumbles 105 feet into the canyon of HVÍTÁ, one of the longest rivers in Iceland.
GEYSIR - Located in the HAUKADALUR geothermal area, this is the geyser from which the English word is derived. GEYSIR itself is now dormant, but an adjacent geyser, STROKKUR, erupts every few minutes.

Day 4

The Highland Road Kjolur to the North Country

KJÖLUR - A plateau that cuts through the remarkable Icelandic highlands.  Situated between two glaciers, HOFSJÖKULL and LANGJÖKULL, the surrounding landscape is magnificent.  Rhyolite, a volcanic stone, gives the KERLINGARFJÖLL mountain range a distincting reddish hue.  And the geothermal field at HVERAVELLIR with its sky blue hot springs is a surreal oasis to bathe and unwind in.
Drive through the Kjölur Highlands to the Myvatn Area in the North. This drive is about 7 hours. The roads are gravel roads, rough but safe and easy to drive carefully in a 4wd car.  On your way you explore the Hvitárvatn glacier lagoon and the Kerlingarfjöll Area (geothermal activity). It is nice to stop by Hveravellir and take a dip in the natural hot tub. Drive towards Akureyri, the Capital of the North.

You could optionally stay one night at the newly built Highland Base Hotel in The Kerlingafjoll Mountains area, with it's upscale rooms, luxury suites, and private lodges.

Day 5

Lake Myvatn and the Diamond Circle

From Akureyri you drive to Lake Mývatn. AKUREYRI - This small, yet bustling city is nestled in EYJAFJÖRÐUR, Iceland’s longest fjord.  Because it serves as the hub for trade, education, and culture in the region, AKUREYRI is often referred to as “the capital of the north.”
MÝVATN - The fourth largest lake in Iceland.  Frequent lava flows have left its shoreline very irregular in shape, and few areas offer such a wide spectrum of geological formations.  The lake lies on an active volcanic belt where eruptions are frequent and intense geothermal activity results in bubbling mud pools, steaming solfataras, and brightly-colored mineral deposits.  Relax in the sublime JARÐBÖÐIN VIÐ MÝVATN, a bathing lagoon filled with mineral-rich, geothermally-heated water.  Marvel at the magical waterfall GOÐAFOSS, and DETTIFOSS, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.  Explore the volcanic area around KRAFLA, the spectacular sulphur fields at NÁMASKARÐ, the dramatic lava formations at DIMMUBORGIR, and the pseudo craters at SKÚTUSTAÐIR.  Or, go on a whale watching and/or bird watcing tour on SKJÁLFANDAFLÓI, a large bay known for its remarkable wildlife.  There are many other natural wonders, like the Jokulsarglufur and Asbyrgi Canyons, The Whale Watching Hub Husavik and more, so it can be worth staying at least 2 nights in the area.
