Skaftafell Blue Ice Cave and Glacier Hike Tour

Combine two of Iceland’s most exciting activities on Vatnajökull, glacier hiking and ice caving! During this tour, you will experience a glacier hike on Europe’s biggest glacier and visit a natural ice cave. Sounds exciting, right?
This ice caving and glacier hiking adventure tour takes place on Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajökull. Ice caves are formed naturally and are, for that reason, forever changing, making them even more charming and unique.
The cave you'll visit is located quite high up on the glacier, so we'll need to hike up to reach it. But don't be afraid! This glacier hike can only add more value to this visit, providing you with two glacier activities instead of one. Visiting a glacier and its ice cave on the volcanic island of Iceland is an awe-inspiring adventure indeed!

Local Ice Cave Tour

Since we started in the 90’s we have gathered a lot of knowledge how to get our clients to the best available ice cave of each day as the conditions of the ice caves change during the winter. In autumn each year we start looking for the ice caves for the winter season. Normally we find caves in several different locations on the south east side of Vatnajökull glacier.

The ice cave we choose from day to day depends on which time of winter, time of day, weather and other conditions at the time. We always go to the most interesting ice cave available at each time. We normally go into one ice cave per trip.

The average duration of the tour is around 3 hours, however this can change depending on how far we need to drive, how far we have to walk and how complicated the ice cave is (sometimes there is only a few meters walk from the car to the ice cave, other times it can be up to 1,5 km).

We do not only look at the size of the ice cave but the beauty and colours, people often think they are bigger than they are in reality.

Ingólfshöfði Puffin Tour

Cape Ingolfshofdi is an isolated headland on the coast half way between Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park and Jökulsárlón ice lagoon. This historical nature reserve is home of thousands of nesting seabirds, like puffins and great skuas. The cape is named after the first settler of Iceland, Ingolfur Arnarson, who spent his first winter in Iceland there in the year 874 AD.
To get to Ingólfshöfði we cross 7 km of waters, marshes, and sands in a tractor-drawn hay cart. The drive takes about 30 minutes each way, so we spend about 1 1/2 hour hiking around the cape. The tractor driver from the nearby farm becomes the tour guide, tells stories and explains the birdlife, and leads the guests safely through the nesting grounds on the cape.
The circle we hike around the nature reserve is 2-3 km long. In the beginning we need to walk up a steep sand slope, and then through rocky terrain, but then it gets easier, mostly hiking on flat grassland and we make many stops along the way. We don't recommend that people participate in this trip unless they can do this hike.

Departures Season Duration
Mondays - Saturdays Mid May - mid August 2 1/2 hour
