Here you find Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring. Continue to Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls.  There are several museums in the area such as the Icelandic settlement museum in Borgarnes, Snorrastofa culture and history exhibition in Reykholt, the home of Snorri Sturluson, Iceland´s most famous Saga writers.  and Hvanneyri Farm Machinery Museum.

Day 2: The Saga Rich Region of Dalir

Now you drive to the historic region of Dalir (the valleys) in the west.  Many famous vikings lived there, like Eric the Red at Eiriksstaðir.  Leifur (the Lucky) Eiríksson and other sons of Eric are said to have been born there.  An old longhouse has been built in commemoration of Leif´s discovery of America.
Hjarðarholt, north of the town of Búðardalur, was the birthplace of Kjartan Ólafsson, one of the protagonists in Laxdæla Saga.  There lived also Víga-Hrappur who haunted the place so that no one dared to live there.  There are many other settlements in this region.
You will stay at Vogur Country Lodge or nearby, where you can admire the beautiful scenery or visit many interesting places in the neighborhood or take a hike on the coast or up the valleys.

Day 3: Mountain Passes, Fjords and Ghosts

Today you will drive north through the mountain pass of Þröskuldar (easier to drive than to pronounce), and visit the town of Hólmavík and the village Drangsnes.   If you stay in the area you can drive further north and visit the unique and remote fjords of Strandir, one of the most haunted areas of Iceland. You must visit the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Withscraft.
You can travel as far as the Ghost Village of Djúpavík, a flourishing center of herring salting in the first half of the 20th century. When the herring fishery failed, the factory closed down, leaving Djúpavík a ghost village.
You either stay in the area, or drive back to Vogur Country Lodge.

Day 4: Seals, Sea Stacks, Canyons and Fortresses

Today you head east to the region of Húnaflói Bay and the village of Hvamstangi.  There is a special Seal Center (Selasetur Íslands) in Hvammstangi, where you can learn about seals and the history of sealery, seal products and seal related farming in Iceland.  You can also take a seal watching Tour in Vatnsnes peninsula.
You might stay at Laugabakki, but at the closeby farm Bjarg, lived one of the greatest of the saga heroes, Grettir the Strong. He became an outlaw and his head was buried at Grettisþúfa (Gretti´s Mound), when his killers had brought it home to his mother, Ásdís.
If you drive out the Vatnsnes Peninsula, you will see Hvítserkur (White Frock) stand proudly at sea. This Guano-painted part of a dyke is 15m high and resembles a sea monster or a giant troll-bull.  There are many other interesting natural phenomena in the area, like the Kolugljúfur Canyons, the Vatnsdalshólar Hills and the Borgarvirki fortress.

Day 5: Reykjavik City and Museums

Today you drive over the mountain pass of Holtavörðuheiði and head back to Reykjavík.  REYKJAVÍK is the northern most capital city in the world. Lined with colorful, corrugated steel buildings, the streets in the downtown area are very pedestrian-friendly and full of fascinating museums, quaint shops, and cozy cafes.

Day 6: Departure and the Blue Lagoon

If you leave in the afternoon you can spend the morning in Reykjavik or leave early and stop by the Blue lagoon on your way to the airport.
